Position: Alternative Sentencing Advocate

Overview:

For the majority of our clients, the sentencing phase of a case may be the most important and critical. For this reason attorneys must explore all possible sentencing alternatives. It is the responsibility of the Alternative Sentencing Advocate (ASA) to assess the criminogenic needs of the client and suggest sentencing alternatives, including community and corrections based programs and services. The ASA provides detailed, up-to-date program information to the attorney and the court and connects the client to the alternatives. This is an exempt level position, represented by the bargaining unit.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

- Work closely with the Defense Team in investigating and determining appropriate sentencing alternatives for clients.
- Discover and document appropriate social service resources available for clients, particularly those in the Portland Metropolitan area.
- Act as liaison to community and correction based programs to create and improve relations between the programs and MPD.
- Participate actively on committees and task forces.
- Discover, develop and maintain expert resources.
- Provide appropriate research and investigation as requested.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Self-motivated, inquisitive, insightful, and nonjudgmental team player with well-developed analytical skills.
- Ability to prioritize and accurately accomplish multiple tasks.
- Must be proficient in MS Word, Outlook, and the Internet.
- Must have a good command of the English language; oral and written.
- Excellent spelling and grammar to compose and edit case-related documents.
- Ability to visit clients and witnesses in correctional facilities (may preclude employees and applicants arrested and jailed in preceding two years).
- Staff training/teaching capability.
- Work requires continual attention to detail, establishing priorities, and meeting deadlines.

Education and/or Experience:

- High school diploma or GED.
- Prior employment in social work, criminal justice, juvenile justice, psychology, substance abuse, case management or related fields.

E - 32,490.38
F - 34,400.60
G - 36,309.78
H - 37,580.62

Bi-weekly pay periods - A total of 26 paychecks per year.
