Position: Attorney


Overview:
As the leader of the defense team, attorneys provide zealous representation and advocacy for clients.  They participate in training programs and maintain current knowledge of law, trial tactics and court proceedings.  This is an exempt level position, represented by the bargaining unit.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

§         Provide zealous representation and advocacy for clients.

§         Provide effective legal services, within the bounds of law and ethics to clients of MPD.

§         Initiate and lead defense team meetings for case review and discussion; provide leadership for staff.

§         Maintain flow of case related information between team members assigned to each case, within groups and throughout the office, as appropriate.

§         Maintain availability to other staff members for consultation and education; participate in training program.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

§         Current membership in good standing in the Oregon State Bar.

§         Current knowledge of the law, tactics and court proceedings.

§         Ability to deal effectively with people of widely divergent backgrounds.

 

Education and/or Experience:

 

§         JD Degree.

 

Application Process:

 

Our hiring process involves a paper screening of all applications.  Those applicants deemed most qualified for our firm will be invited for an initial interview.

 

You will be notified whether or not you are eligible for a second interview.  If so, you will be given a time frame as to when the second interviews will be conducted.  Second interviews are conducted by the Directors two or three times per year.  Following the second interview, all candidates are notified by mail whether or not their names will be placed on the eligibility list.

 

Should your name be placed on the eligibility list ("hiring pool"), you will be contacted when an appropriate opening occurs.  Inclusion in the hiring pool is not a guarantee of employment.

2. A cover letter introducing yourself.

3. An expanded resume to include education, bar memberships or anticipated bar memberships, and publications.

4. Samples of your legal writing, preferably in the area of criminal law.

5. A copy of your most current law school transcript (which need not be certified) with an explanation of your school's grading system.

6. Three references from employers, law professors, or members of the community.  These letters should be sent directly to this office by the persons writing them and should be marked to the attention of the Human Resources manager.

 

If you are not presently a member of the Oregon Bar, you should indicate when you plan to take the exam, as that is a prerequisite for becoming a staff attorney.
