Position: Legal Assistant 1
Overview:
The Legal Assistant 1 position provides administrative support to the
defense team. They act as liaison between the courts and MPD's docketing personnel,
communicate with new clients and their families at initial court
appearances, and convey immediate client needs to the team. This is a
non-exempt level position, represented by the bargaining unit.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
§
Read, organize and check discovery for conflicts.
§
Prepare and send correspondence.
§
Photocopy and prepare trial notebooks.
§
Get necessary documents from Judge's chambers and file rooms.
§
Assist attorneys and clients at court appearances.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
§
Must be proficient in MS word, Outlook, and the Internet.
§
Must be able to type at least 45 words per minute.
§
Must have good command of the English language; oral and written.
§
Must have knowledge of office administrative procedures.
§
Some analytical ability is required in order to gather and summarize
data, find solutions to various administrative problems, and prioritize
work.
§
Work requires continual attention to detail and the ability to
establish priorities and meet deadlines.
§
Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept
direction on given assignments.
Education and/or Experience:
§
High school diploma or GED.
§
Experience in dealing effectively with people of widely divergent
backgrounds.
§
Education or experience working in the legal or social service field
is preferred but not required.
