Position: Legal Assistant 2
Overview:
The Legal Assistant 2 position works directly with attorneys and
investigators to assist in the zealous representation of indigent
clients. They provide immediate and ongoing client contact and are an
important part of the defense team. This is non-exempt level
position, represented by the bargaining unit.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
§
Interview clients both in custody and in an office setting.
§
Gather documents and records pertinent to the case.
§
Act as liaison between the client and attorney, as well as,
communicating with release agencies, court staff, client family members and
experts.
§
Participate in case review meetings with the Defense Team.
§
Assist the attorneys in court.
§
Address the alternative needs of our indigent clients.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
§
Self-motivated, inquisitive, insightful and nonjudgmental team player
with well-developed analytical skills.
§
Must be proficient in MS Word, Outlook, and the Internet.
§
Must have a good command of the English language; oral and written.
§
Excellent spelling and grammar to compose and edit case-related
documents.
§
Ability to visit clients and witnesses in correctional facilities
(may preclude employees and applicants arrested and jailed in preceding two
years).
§
Ability to prioritize and accurately accomplish multiple tasks.
§
Staff training/teaching capability.
§
Work requires continual attention to detail, establishing
priorities, and meeting deadlines.
Education and/or Experience:
§
High school diploma or GED.
§
Experience working with a diverse population in an office,
educational, or social service settings.
§
Education or experience working in the legal or social services
field is preferred but not required.
