Position: Research Student
Overview:
Working under the supervision of an experienced public defender,
research law students work with attorneys on all types of projects and
cases. Generally, research students are based in our Portland office
working on cases for attorneys in the Portland and Hillsboro offices.
Research students write legal memos, conduct legislative history research,
research case law, draft pleadings, and perform similar tasks.
Legal internships may be
performed for academic credit, or on a work-study, volunteer, or paid basis.
Paid student research
positions are generally part-time for the school year. MPD welcomes
applications from students for summer research positions provided the
student can volunteer their services, or is the recipient of a grant, or
other similar arrangements can be made.

Conduct legal research
effectively and efficiently.

Write clearly and succinctly.

Able to work independently on assigned tasks
as well as to accept direction on given assignments.
Education and/or Experience:
Any law school
student, including first year students are welcome to apply. There is no
requirement that students applying for the research law student position be
certified to appear in court.
Applicants for a research
student position should be proficient in the use of computer legal research
programs and be able to use a computer to write.
Wage:
This is an hourly, non-exempt position paying
$11.00 per hour.

Our hiring process
involves a paper screening of all applications. Those applicants deemed most
qualified for our firm will be invited for an initial interview.
You
will be notified whether or not you are eligible for a second interview.
If so, you will be given a time frame as to when the second interviews will
be conducted.
