Overview:
Working under the supervision of an experienced public defender, research law students work with attorneys on all types of projects and cases. Generally, research students are based in our Portland office working on cases for attorneys in the Portland and Hillsboro offices. Research students write legal memos, conduct legislative history research, research case law, draft pleadings, and perform similar tasks.
Legal internships may be performed for academic credit, as work-study supported by PILP funding, or a volunteer basis.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
– Provide effective timely legal research as assigned by the supervising attorney.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
– Conduct legal research effectively and efficiently.
– Write clearly and succinctly.
– Able to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on given assignments.
Education and/or Experience:
Any law school student, including first year students are welcome to apply. There is no requirement that students applying for the research law student position be certified to appear in court.
Applicants for a research student position should be proficient in the use of computer legal research programs and be able to use a computer to write.
